The Joy of 45 Collecting: Lost 45 Tunes Not Available from iTunes, Spotify, or Similar Services
Jukebox "Snippet" 45s: Chronological List of Site Additions
As I add 45s to our inventory, I pick select 45s to highlight with mp3 "snippets" so you can hear the music yourself. I only record "snippets" of tunes I particularly like, ones I think have been under-played and under-appreciated, or ones that are so rare and wonderful I'll never hear them otherwise. For myself, I keep an iTunes playlist of these "snippets," and that playlist is one I listen to most often. These pages chronicle the mp3 "snippets" I've added to our online "jukebox" in reverse chronological order. You can browse the pages to see what was added and when. Click on the blue "Play" button to play the snippet, or click on a song's title to load the page. Many of these 45 records are still for sale, though just as many have been sold. I hope you enjoy perusing these pages as much as I have enjoyed putting them together!
Like all of the rarely seen Band of Oz singles, this one features dynamite Northern Soul-style dancers on both sides. Of course, in the Carolinas, they call this "Beach Music"!
This terrific Northern Soul dancer comes courtesy of a tiny Charlotte, NC, label, which specialized in what is now called "Beach Music," much of which overlaps what we call "Northern Soul." Have a listen to the mp3 "snippet" to hear what I mean!
Here's a very nice copy of this hard-to-find 1967 Northern Soul dancer... Well worth seeking out if you can find it: Have a listen to the mp3 "snippet", which I hope you enjoy as much as I do!
So sublime and true I had to rush-release an mp3 "snippet" for our online "jukebox," so I can hear it more often. A personal favorite I hope you enjoy as well.
Here's a beautiful copy of this rarely seen and seldom heard 1964 Doo Wop nugget, which I like so much I've added an mp3 "snippet" to our jukebox... Have a listen!
Here's a beautiful copy of this rarely heard, but totally essential, 1963 hit, a Carole King-Gerry Goffin tune that puts its sound squarely in the Girl Group rock genre. It was the second big Pop hit for Country singer Skeeter Davis in as many years, following "The End of the World."
Simply one of the essential touchstones of the origins of Rock'n'Roll, later covered by the Johnny Burnette Trio in a scorching Rockabilly version. This Gusto reissue has the original Mono mix.
First pressed on Bargain 5003, this 1961 single was released later the same year. It features a dynamite — and very short at 1:38! — Northern Soul-style dancer on the A side.
This impossible-to-find, yet simply gorgeous 45 has two outstanding sides. Have a listen to the mp3 "snippet" of the B side and you'll hear why it fetches such a high price ($250!).
Talk about love at first sound... I don't normally fall for simple "Do This Dance"-style numbers, though there are many exceptions (including, e.g., "Tighten Up"), but this one has such a powerful rhythm section, and that emotive guitar break, I just had to get a copy in the queue of the Classic 45s "Jukebox," so check out the mp3 "snippet" of the track. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
This is the first release of this very appealing Northern Soul ("Beach Music") tune, on a tiny Charlotte, NC, label... It was picked up by Scepter in 1967 and re-released.
