The Joy of 45 Collecting: Lost 45 Tunes Not Available from iTunes, Spotify, or Similar Services
Jukebox "Snippet" 45s: Chronological List of Site Additions
As I add 45s to our inventory, I pick select 45s to highlight with mp3 "snippets" so you can hear the music yourself. I only record "snippets" of tunes I particularly like, ones I think have been under-played and under-appreciated, or ones that are so rare and wonderful I'll never hear them otherwise. For myself, I keep an iTunes playlist of these "snippets," and that playlist is one I listen to most often. These pages chronicle the mp3 "snippets" I've added to our online "jukebox" in reverse chronological order. You can browse the pages to see what was added and when. Click on the blue "Play" button to play the snippet, or click on a song's title to load the page. Many of these 45 records are still for sale, though just as many have been sold. I hope you enjoy perusing these pages as much as I have enjoyed putting them together!
Here's a beautiful copy of one of Northern Soul fans' favorite dance numbers from the early 1970s. Have a listen to the mp3 "snippet," and you'll understand its appeal!
This is one of the most sublime recordings to come out of 1973. It's a song that everyone knows, but which has never been a huge hit for anyone. A few Country artists did fine covers — in particular, Sammi Smith's 1977 version — and if you do a search in iTunes, you'll find umteen covers by folks like the Dixie Chicks, Elvis Presley, Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge, Kenny Rogers, Millie Jackson, and Irma Thomas. But frankly, this one beats 'em all — except perhaps for Sammi Smith's (he says, hedging).
A real sleeper, this great track sneaks up on you and demands that you recognize how great it is. Eventually, you do... and you're hooked! Take a listen and hear for yourself.
This 1963 release features the singer's amazing rendition of "Bo Diddley," which (heaven help me!) I actually like better than Bo Diddley's original. I'm putting a snippet in the jukebox ... see what you think!
Not to be missed — and impossible to find — this was Nirvana's second single from "Nevermind," the followup to their breakthrough hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It is one of only two 45 rpm singles the group released in the U.S. before Kurt Cobain's untimely death broke them up.
This is a great copy of one of the Chiffons lesser-known 45's. Of course, one thing to learn about the Chiffons is that ALL of their 45's are great and well worth collecting.
