The Joy of 45 Collecting: Lost 45 Tunes Not Available from iTunes, Spotify, or Similar Services
Jukebox "Snippet" 45s: Chronological List of Site Additions
As I add 45s to our inventory, I pick select 45s to highlight with mp3 "snippets" so you can hear the music yourself. I only record "snippets" of tunes I particularly like, ones I think have been under-played and under-appreciated, or ones that are so rare and wonderful I'll never hear them otherwise. For myself, I keep an iTunes playlist of these "snippets," and that playlist is one I listen to most often. These pages chronicle the mp3 "snippets" I've added to our online "jukebox" in reverse chronological order. You can browse the pages to see what was added and when. Click on the blue "Play" button to play the snippet, or click on a song's title to load the page. Many of these 45 records are still for sale, though just as many have been sold. I hope you enjoy perusing these pages as much as I have enjoyed putting them together!
Man, this is a hard single to find! I'm not sure why that is, because "Nadine" was a pretty big hit at the time — Berry's first after serving time on a "morals charge." In his comeback, he racked up 5 hits in 1964, but "Nadine" hasn't retained the luster of some of those other 1964 classics, such as "Promised Land" or "You Never Can Tell." Still, it's at #661 on the Dave Marsh list, making it well worth the search.
This single has a typical Percy Sledge deep soul ballad on the A side, which is quite wonderful and deserved to be a top 10 hit back in 1966. But hidden on the B side is a track that surely turns the Northern Soul dance clubs on fire when it's played. Just a wonderful beat, gorgeous melody, and great singing! What more could you want?
I liked this one so much on first listen I simply had to break down and make an mp3 "snippet". Turns out the song's popularity has been soaring lately, and it's price has soared as well. Let me just add my voice to the chorus of those who understand that while there are bad Muslims, just as there are bad Christians or Jews or Hindus or Buddhists, not all Muslims are bad. Let's remember boy wonder Cassius Clay, born in my home town of Louisville, KY, became a Muslim and changed his name to Mohammed Ali, for Christ's sakes! And here's a song praising him to high heaven — a Muslim! What we need to do is support the good Muslims and help them oppose the ones who are subverting their faith. (Ask any Muslim you know, and they'll explain how the Islamic State, Al Qaeda and the like do not represent the true Muslim faith.) Anyway, hope you like the song... it's just the kind of primitive yet irresistible Northern Soul dancer I love.
This single has a dynamite A-side dancer ("I Can't Make It") you won't want to miss... check out the mp3 "snippet" we've added to our online "jukebox!"
This terrific Northern Soul track is so unusual I had to quickly put an mp3 "snippet" in our online jukebox... have a listen! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Here's a beautiful promo copy of this amazing single by Who bassist John Entwistle. If you haven't heard the amazing hard-rocker on the A side, you're definitely missing out on one of the best rarities in classic rock! Have a listen to the mp3 snippet in our jukebox to hear what I'm talking about.
This is one of the records, along with some of the early Beatles and many others, that demonstrated one way that rockabilly transitioned into a musical form that became known as Power Pop. Absolutely essential single — note that both Rolling Stone (#177) and Dave Marsh (#102) put it high on their respective lists of the greatest singles ever made.
