The Joy of 45 Collecting: Lost 45 Tunes Not Available from iTunes, Spotify, or Similar Services
Jukebox "Snippet" 45s: Chronological List of Site Additions
As I add 45s to our inventory, I pick select 45s to highlight with mp3 "snippets" so you can hear the music yourself. I only record "snippets" of tunes I particularly like, ones I think have been under-played and under-appreciated, or ones that are so rare and wonderful I'll never hear them otherwise. For myself, I keep an iTunes playlist of these "snippets," and that playlist is one I listen to most often. These pages chronicle the mp3 "snippets" I've added to our online "jukebox" in reverse chronological order. You can browse the pages to see what was added and when. Click on the blue "Play" button to play the snippet, or click on a song's title to load the page. Many of these 45 records are still for sale, though just as many have been sold. I hope you enjoy perusing these pages as much as I have enjoyed putting them together!
One of the best songs of Parton's long career, and further evidence that she's one of the best Country songwriters of all time — and the best female Country songwriter for sure.
The group's last single was actually one of their best efforts on Mums, but sadly was pretty much ignored at the time. Although it rocks pretty hard, it's got such a catchy chorus that it feels more like "power pop" than their classic 1960's recordings.
One of my all-time favorite Bubblegum obscurities... hard to find, but well worth the effort! Yes, it's pretty strange, but still quite delectable. The U.K. group had several hits in the mid-1970s, this being their first and biggest, climbing to #3 on the singles chart there.
This is a truly special offering... It was Little Anthony's first single on the Veep label (a United Artists subsidiary like DCP), and it's a masterpiece of the Northern Soul dance beat, plus a high drama and rich arrangement that would do Phil Spector proud. It must have been disappointing to all involved that the record did so poorly on the charts — not even cracking the top half of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and not getting any measurable airplay in the Black market at all. But those numbers don't in any way detract from its value to 45 collectors, or to music lovers in general.
This is a terrific Philly-Style soul dancer! The song is great, and the arrangement is awesome. Though a hit on the RnB/Black singles chart, it fizzled on the pop chart... too bad, cause it's a definite keeper. I'm sticking a snippet in the jukebox to keep it close by. :-)
If any of you thought soul was dead, take a listen to this little modern wonder. The group does an amazing 2011 version of what King Curtis called "Memphis Soul Stew"!
