I Get Around/ Don't Worry Baby by The Beach Boys

Label: Capitol 5174 Year: 1964
Factory sleeve included
Condition: M- $30.00
I Get Around/ Don't Worry BabyAn absolute must for any collector 1960s rock, this single gives you a lot of bang for your buck! Its A side, "I Get Around" is parked at #250 on the Marsh 1001 list, while the flip, "Don't Worry Baby," is at #75! By the way, we follow the lead of Joel Whitburn, whose legendary Record Research books are the most comprehensive reference material on the lifespan of 45 records that managed to gain airplay and sales on a National (U.S.) level. In this case, "I Get Around" charted a week before "Don't Worry Baby," and it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. "Don't Worry Baby" climbed only as high as #24.

Since the "matrix numbers" on this 45 are non-sequential, they should not be used to determine A/B sides for this record, as misguided contributors to Discogs have done, listing "Don't Worry Baby" as the A side. Other misguided (in our view) publishers of discographies determine A/B sides based on musical "worth," judging the A side to always be the "better" song of the two sides, regardless of airplay and sales (John Manship does this in his books.) Though I'm sympathetic to that approach and use it as a choice of last resort, I prefer using unambiguous data whenever it's available -- and that includes chart data from the various U.S. and international music industry publishers, such as Billboard. In fact, I'd say quoting from a record's chart history is essential in determining A/B sides where the matrix numbers are non-sequential or otherwise ambiguously related. This is a not-uncommon case for U.S. 45 records from the 1950s-70s, and the dismissal by Discogs of Record Research and other chart data in determining A/B sides underlies a lot of the amateurish errors one sees on Discogs. So many mistakes could be avoided if one could quote chart data in ambiguous situations for 45 A/B sides. (Sorry for the somewhat technical digression!) Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Capitol Records factory sleeve. The vinyl has very light surface noise that's audible beneath the music at times, but not so noticeable as to lower the grade to EX.
